Stop Paying for the Privilege to be Treated Badly

Stop Paying for the Privilege to Be Treated Badly

I stumbled on this phrase a while back, and it’s lingered with me ever since. Today felt like the right moment to sit with it and share what it brought to mind.

There comes a point in every healing journey, no matter what it’s from, where a simple truth rises to the surface — clear, sharp, and impossible to ignore:

Stop paying for the privilege to be treated badly.

For years, I didn’t realize how much I was “paying.” Not in money, but in emotional energy, time, peace, and the slow erosion of my sense of self.

Abuse of any kind tries to convince you that you owe something to the people who harm you — your attention, your fear, your silence, your explanations. It tricks you into believing that if you just endure it a little longer, respond a little more politely, defend yourself a little more thoroughly, maybe the cruelty will stop.

But cruelty doesn’t stop because you accommodate it. Cruelty stops when you refuse to participate in it. Even with family members…

The Cost of Staying Silent

When I was being targeted online from 2017-2025 — through smear campaigns, fabricated narratives, and entire websites built to distort my identity — I didn’t fully understand the toll it was taking. Every time I checked those pages, every time I tried to correct a lie, every time I braced myself for the next attack, I was paying a price.

I was giving them my time. I was giving them my emotional bandwidth. I was giving them access to my life.

And for what? For the privilege of being treated badly.

The Turning Point

Healing didn’t begin the day the harassment stopped. It began the day I stopped engaging with it. The day I realized that their behaviour was not a reflection of my worth, but of their obsession. They were doing all they could to break me.  The day I understood that I didn’t owe them anything — not my fear, not my explanations, not my presence.

Leaving wasn’t a sign of weakness. It was me choosing self‑respect, and it opened my eyes to human nature.

It was the moment I stopped paying and focused on myself.

Reclaiming My Space

In the beginning, my website used to be a place where I documented the abuse, explained the lies, and defended myself against people who were never interested in the truth. But life changes when you stop centring the people who harmed you.

My content is shifting because I am shifting. My life is no longer defined by what they did. It’s defined by what I choose to build now.

I choose reflection. I choose education on all the traits I was exposed to. I choose growth. I choose peace. I choose to invest in myself instead of paying for mistreatment.

A Reminder for Anyone Who Needs It

If you’re dealing with cyberbullying, harassment, or any form of mistreatment — online or offline — I hope you hear this clearly:

You don’t have to keep paying. You don’t have to stay where you’re diminished. You don’t have to tolerate behaviour that chips away at your wellbeing.

You are allowed to walk away. You are allowed to protect your peace. You are allowed to stop giving your energy to people who only take.

Because being treated badly is not a privilege. And you don’t owe anyone the cost of your suffering.
