The Cost of Living vs. The Value of Living
Is the Place You Live Worth the Cost?
Living on an island isn’t cheap. Here in Newfoundland & Labrador, the cost of food, groceries, and everyday necessities seems to keep climbing. When so much of what we need has to be shipped in, we feel it in our wallets. Some days, I look at the prices of things and wonder how much more expensive life is going to get.
But then I look around at where I live, and I remind myself why I chose to be here.
I live in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, a place with its own personality, history, and way of life. There is something special about living in a place that is so colourful, with its bright houses, rugged coastline, ocean views, and ever-changing weather. We have a rich history, beautiful scenery, and a culture that makes this place feel different from anywhere else.
I can take a walk and be near the ocean, watch the fog roll across the harbour, or simply enjoy the feeling of being home. There is a certain comfort in the familiar sights and sounds of this place, and I don’t take that for granted. I am grateful I am here.
For me, home is about more than what things cost. It’s about how I feel living here. It’s about having a life I enjoy, being close to the things I love, and appreciating the everyday moments that make life meaningful. After going through difficult times and rebuilding my life, I’ve come to appreciate the peace and contentment I have now. Those things are worth a great deal to me and don’t involve money.
Of course, I still have to be mindful of the cost of living. We all have bills to pay, groceries to buy, and financial decisions to make. Loving where you live doesn’t mean ignoring the realities of the cost. It means weighing those realities against what you gain by being there.
And for me, this island still comes out ahead.
I don’t need everything to be perfect, and I certainly wouldn’t complain about lower grocery prices! But I value the life I’ve built here, the beauty around me, and the freedom to enjoy my days in a place that feels like home.
Sometimes, the real value of a place isn’t measured in dollars. It’s measured in the quality of life it gives you, the memories you make, and the sense of belonging you feel when you look around and think, I’m happy here.
So, yes, the cost of living on an island can be challenging, but for me, the trade-off is worth it.
What about you? Do you think the place you live is worth the cost? What makes your home special enough that you’re willing to pay a little more to live there?
