From Survival to Thriving: Owning My Story

As November deepens, the days grow shorter and the nights stretch long across Newfoundland. The air carries a quiet stillness, a reminder that another season is turning. For nine years, I lived in survival mode—weathering storms both outside and within, bracing myself against the winds of cruelty and the chill of isolation. My story was one of endurance, of holding on through so many darkest nights.

But just as the land prepares for winter, I, too, have shifted. Survival is no longer my only story. I am learning to thrive. I find beauty in the bare trees, strength in the icy waves, and comfort in the glow of a warm lamp against the early dusk. These small moments remind me that healing is not about erasing the past—it’s about rewriting it, transforming pain into resilience and silence into voice.

Thriving means choosing joy even when the world feels heavy. It means savouring the cozy rituals of the season—coffee by the window, laughter with neighbours, the simple act of breathing deeply in the cold air. It means knowing that I am more than what I endured.

This late November, I honour the shift: from survival to thriving, from darkness to light. My story continues, but now it carries warmth, courage, and the promise of brighter days ahead.

I am grateful.
