It’s a bright and breezy Thursday here in St. John’s (going to a sweatering temp of 28 degrees Celsius), and I can’t help but feel the energy of summer in the air. The city is alive with anticipation, and I find myself grinning as I think about all the wonderful events lined up for us this season.

There’s something about July in Newfoundland that makes me want to get out, connect with neighbours, and soak up every bit of sunshine and laughter I can find. I plan on doing just that!

Summer in the City

I’ve been keeping an eye on the City’s event calendar, and let me tell you, there’s no shortage of things to do. Whether you’re a music lover, a foodie, or just someone who enjoys a good stroll along the harbour, there’s truly something for everyone.

As I am always on vacation, we plan on playing Tourist again this year while hubby is on his vacation this summer. He has a week booked coming soon and another next month that we get to enjoy!

What’s On My Radar

  • Hop On, Hop Off Bus Tour: I greatly enjoy these tourist bus tours around St. John’s, as I always learn something new from the operator and hubby and I get to visit places that are not easy to get to without a vehicle. I love spending the day at Cape Spear, watching the waves and catching the antics of a whale or 2 and exploring Signal Hill.
  • Music in Bannerman Park: I love how the city brings local talent to the heart of town. Every Thursday evening, Bannerman Park transforms into a stage for musicians from all over the island. I plan to pack a picnic, grab a blanket, and let the tunes carry me away.

  • Downtown Pedestrian Mall: There’s nothing quite like wandering Water Street when it’s closed to traffic. The patios spill out onto the road, and the air is filled with the scent of fresh coffee and baked goods. I always run into someone I know, and the atmosphere is just electric. The pop-up events and concerts are great to watch as well!

  • Family Movie Nights: The City is hosting outdoor movie nights at Bowring Park again this year, as well as downtown in the Pedestrian Mall!

  • Boat Tours: It isn’t summer in Newfoundland without a Boat Tour, or two! Hubby and I go from Ocean Quest, which is located right here in St. John’s Harbour, and O’Brien’s in Bay Bulls. I love Bay Bulls, not only do you get to see whales, but you also get to see so many seabirds! The sounds they make are awesome!
  • George Street Music Festival: I got an email yesterday with the lineup for this music festival on George Street this year, and I am very excited to note that Kellie Loder is playing! I plan on nabbing a couple of tickets tomorrow when they go on sale. I love their music, as you can tell by the shares I do of it.

  • Regetta Day: August 7, 2025, is scheduled for Regatta Day on Quidi Vidi Lake! Spending a few hours watching the boat races and checking out the many vendors lined up all around the lake is fantastic fun! It is an event hubby and I have attended every year since we returned to The Rock, and we have a great time!

A Big One!

  • 2025 Canada Games: St. John’s is proudly hosting the 2025 Canada Games, August 8th to 25th, 2025 – the first summer games hosted in our Province since 1977. Over 4,000 athletes, coaches and managers will compete for their provinces and territories, representing the sports they have trained tirelessly for. In August, Newfoundland will host all of these athletes, coaches, and their family & friends for these games. I, for one, am very excited to meet some new people and check out the events planned.

St. John’s 2025

Looking Forward

I find myself reflecting on how these events bring us together. After the past few years, I cherish every opportunity to gather, laugh, and make new memories. I’m especially excited for the multicultural festival later this month—sampling foods from around the world without leaving St. John’s is my kind of adventure!

My Summer Intentions

This July, I’m making a promise to myself: to say yes to more invitations, to linger a little longer at the park, and to let the city’s spirit fill me up. I hope to see you out there—maybe at a concert, maybe in line for an ice cream, or maybe just wandering the colourful streets, grateful for another St. John’s summer.

Here’s to a season of connection, celebration, and simple joys. Let’s make this summer one to remember!
