Breaking Free!

How Education Helped Me Overcome Toxic Tenants and Their Narratives

There’s a moment in every healing journey when the fog finally lifts, and you finally SEE! I reached my moment a couple of years ago, and everything I learned since only reinforces it.

For me, that moment came when I began studying the psychology behind toxic traits – projection, gaslighting, manipulation, and the desperate need some people have to tear others down. I am so grateful to the specialists who gave me the terms to research!

Once I researched the terms, I could understand the patterns I was seeing, and everything clicked into place. Their behaviour stopped feeling personal, and I stopped carrying the weight of their actions. It allowed me to release the toxic shame that was placed on me!

Education didn’t just give me knowledge. It gave me freedom.

All those years ago, I worked in an environment where a couple of determined individuals tried to twist my professionalism into something ugly. They wanted to define me through their accusations, their narratives, and their chaos. But the more I learned about the toxic dynamics they were showing me, the more clearly I saw the truth: their behaviour was a reflection of them, not me.

Understanding toxic traits became the key that unlocked the door I’d been pushing against for far too long.

  • I learned how projection works – and suddenly their accusations lost all power.
  • I learned how gaslighting operates – and their attempts to rewrite reality fell flat.
  • I learned how people with toxic patterns target those who are competent, honest, and steady – and I stopped mistaking their hostility for my failure.

Once you see the patterns, you can’t unsee them. And once you understand it, you’re no longer trapped inside it.

My education didn’t erase what happened, but it transformed how I carry it. Instead of feeling wounded, I feel informed. Instead of feeling attacked, I feel aware. Instead of feeling defined by their behaviour, I feel defined by my resilience.

The tenants who tried to destroy me no longer have any hold on my life. I no longer write about them; I write about the patterns they showed me. Their websites are gone, all of them, except for a personal one that is blank. All their narratives have collapsed under the weight of everyone’s truths.

And I stand here today not as someone who survived them, but as someone who outgrew them. I am sure I am not the only one! There are more targets out there feeling a strong sense of relief that the Ontario Judicial System worked as it should, just as I am!

Knowledge gave me clarity. Clarity gave me peace. And peace gave me freedom.

If there’s one message I hope others take from my experience, it’s this: When you understand toxic behaviour, you stop absorbing it. You stop internalizing it. You stop believing it. And you finally step into the life that was waiting for you all along.

I’m grateful for the education that helped me reclaim my story. I’m grateful for the resilience that carried me through. And I’m grateful for the freedom that comes from knowing who I am – and who I am not.

I went through it, I learned from it, and I’m still here – stronger, wiser, and free.
