Happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day!

Canada Day matters more to me now than it ever has. In a world that feels louder, sharper, and more divided, July 1st lands like a steadying breath — a reminder of the things that hold us together rather than pull us apart.

Out here in St. John’s, you can feel it in the small moments: a flag catching the harbour wind, families walking Water Street with ice cream, the quiet pride of people who know what it means to weather storms and still choose kindness. Canada Day isn’t about perfection or pretending our country has no work left to do. It’s about recognizing the values that make this place worth tending — fairness, decency, moderation, and the belief that we’re stronger when we look out for one another.

In today’s world, those values feel almost radical. They’re certainly precious.

Canada Day reminds me that our national story isn’t written by the loudest voices or the harshest rhetoric. It’s written by everyday people who still believe in community, in responsibility, in helping your neighbour shovel out after a storm. It’s written by the quiet confidence of a country that doesn’t need to shout to know who it is.

For me, celebrating Canada Day is choosing hope — choosing the version of Canada that reflects our best selves, not our most fearful ones. It’s choosing to keep building a country where respect isn’t a performance but a practice, and where strength looks like steadiness rather than aggression.

And in a world like today’s, that choice feels more important than ever.
