Emotional Intelligence in Mental Health Recovery

Emotional intelligence refers to a person’s ability to recognize and understand their own emotions and the emotions of others and to effectively manage and regulate their emotions in social interactions and relationships. It involves being aware of one’s own feelings, being able to empathize with others, and being skilled in communicating and resolving conflicts in a healthy and constructive manner. Emotional intelligence is considered an important factor in personal and professional success, as it helps individuals navigate social situations, build and maintain relationships, and make sound decisions based on both logic and emotions.

Overcoming adversity and rebuilding mental health after facing challenges can be a daunting task. However, through my own journey, I have discovered the immense power of emotional intelligence in this process. In this blog post, I want to share my story of the transformative role emotional intelligence played in it. It is my hope that by sharing the concepts of gratitude, mindfulness, and love of life, as it means to me, others may find solace and inspiration in their own personal growth.

I have come a long way from the darkest moments of my life and I am so very grateful for that! There was a time when my mental health was at its lowest point due to a series of unfortunate events. I found myself entangled in a smear campaign, targeted by toxic tenants who engaged in cyberbullying, attempting to destroy my reputation and sanity, just for doing my job. They turned a professional issue into a very personal one. The impact of gaslighting, triangulation, and manipulation left deep scars on my psyche. False allegations were thrown my way almost every day for over 2 years, and I felt like there was no escape from this torment.

However, amidst the chaos, I discovered a glimmer of hope – emotional intelligence. Although it seemed unrelated to my situation at the time, I decided to delve into the world of emotional intelligence, hoping to find some peace of mind, even in the midst of my struggles.

  • Increase self-awareness: Start by understanding your own emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. Take time to reflect on how you feel in different situations and why you react the way you do. Learning to recognize and understand your emotions is the first step towards improving emotional intelligence.
  • Practice empathy: Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. To enhance emotional intelligence, actively listen to others and try to understand their perspectives. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes will help you develop stronger connections and build empathy.
  • Manage emotions: Developing the ability to control and manage your emotions is essential for emotional intelligence. Practice techniques like mindfulness, deep breathing, and journaling to help regulate your emotions. Find healthy outlets for stress and anger, such as physical exercise or talking to a trusted friend.
  • Enhance social skills: Building strong relationships and effective communication skills is crucial for emotional intelligence. Work on actively listening to others, being open-minded, and expressing yourself clearly. Look for opportunities to practice these skills in various settings, such as work or social situations.
  • Seek feedback: Ask for feedback from others to gain insights into how your emotions and behaviours impact them. Listen to constructive criticism and use it as an opportunity for growth. This feedback can help you identify areas where you need to improve your emotional intelligence.
  • Practice emotional regulation: Emotional intelligence involves being able to regulate emotions in yourself and others. Learn to recognize and diffuse conflict, manage stress, and stay calm in challenging situations. Engage in activities that promote relaxation and self-care, such as mindfulness, meditation, or hobbies that bring you joy.
  • Continuous learning: Emotional intelligence is a lifelong journey, so commit to continuous learning and self-improvement. Read books, attend workshops or seminars, and engage in conversations that focus on emotional intelligence. Surround yourself with people who have high emotional intelligence and learn from their examples.

Emotional intelligence enabled me to recognize the toxic traits present in my own behaviour. Through introspection, I realized how my own responses and reactions had contributed to the situation. Emotional intelligence taught me the importance of self-awareness and understanding the impact of my actions on those around me. It allowed me to take responsibility for my part in the negative cycle and motivated me to work on personal growth. I had to stop “reacting” and find a response instead.

Recovering my mental health was not an instant process. It has taken years, patience, and consistent effort. Emotional intelligence became my compass, guiding me towards healthier and more fulfilling relationships in all aspects of my life.

As I deepened my understanding of emotional intelligence, I recognized the patterns and dynamics that had led me into harmful relationships. By building my emotional intelligence, I became better equipped to navigate the social complexities and pitfalls that can often lead to toxic encounters. I became aware of red flags and was able to set healthy boundaries, refusing to tolerate behaviours that could jeopardize my well-being.

Through my journey of recovery and personal growth, emotional intelligence has become an essential tool. It has allowed me to develop a love of life, even after enduring unimaginable pain. By embracing emotional intelligence, I have transformed into a stronger, more compassionate individual.

Remember, developing emotional intelligence takes time and practice. Be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories along the way. It requires commitment, self-reflection, and a willingness to continuously learn and grow. As we cultivate emotional intelligence within ourselves, we develop a greater capacity to understand and empathize with others. This newfound understanding can create a ripple effect, generating healing and positive change not only within ourselves but also within our communities.

My journey of mental health recovery has led me to a profound appreciation for the power of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence allowed me to rise above the toxicity I faced, helping me rebuild my life brick by brick. May this story serve as a beacon of hope for those embarking on their own path to recovery, reminding them that emotional intelligence can be a transformative force, capable of guiding us towards a brighter, healthier, and more fulfilling future.

      I find it is very important to cultivate, learning about yourself and your own thoughts and behaviours, rather than wasting your enegery trying to understand someone else. Once I started focusing on myself and why I was acting as I was, and working on those things, I started feeling better.

      1. You’re so welcome. I absolutely agree. It’s something I’m working on therapy too and my therapist has talked about EQ before as I have a hard time expressing my emotions properly.

      2. Expanding your knowledge over EQ will help you with that. I have learned so much about myself, it opened my eyes on my own feelings, behaviours, and how to express myself properly. My relationships have greatly benefitted from it!
